We moved to Seattle in 2016, and quickly fell in love with all the hiking opportunities. We could be on a mountain within 30 minutes, and in our choice of incredible national parks within a few hours. The Pacific Northwest (PNW) really is a treasure, and taught me so much about myself and life. Here are a few leadership lessons from the mountains:
Pack your own backpack
If you’re heading up the mountain and realize you forgot a snack, or the right clothing for the weather, who is to blame? We are accountable for our actions. How we prepare, and the tools we carry can make an impression on others.
Prepare for a myriad of conditions and curveballs
One sunny, warm day in Seattle, we headed up into the mountains. It was significantly colder and already snowing! Preparing for various outcomes helps us keep our momentum. Learning to embrace the “yes, and” acknowledges the present and helps us move towards the future.
Set out with a path in mind; Embrace changes as they come
Without any plans, we can get swept up in other people’s goals and priorities. This can be incredibly de-motivating and leave us feeling disengaged. So, it is imperative to know our path. Flexing to meet evolving business needs is just as valuable though.
Acknowledge the risk and reward
The paths less traveled may have more bear sightings or unknown conditions, but may result in incredible views at the peak! Diverging from the status quo at work may also bring on some unknowns, but calculated risks reap rewards.
The company shapes the experience
Solo ventures may let you flex underutilized skillsets, and provide a unique sense of accomplishment. A trusted partner of comparable skill knows your abilities and when to push you just the right amount. Group ventures offer so many new perspectives. Surround yourself with the right people to complement your skill sets and encourage your forward.
Enjoy the journey
Epic views of Mt. Rainier are something I can hardly put into words, but the hikes are so much more than a few photos at the top. Learning about yourself, strengthening skill sets, growing in your relationship with others are all part of the experience. As you focus on the next promotion, enjoy the work and the people along the way.
