We often hear “either/or” statements, and see things in black and white. Let’s focus on embracing “both” and explore more of the gray area. This can be even harder for neurodivergent thinkers, so read on to see how ADHDers can embrace the “both”.
Focusing on the Pros OR Cons
Some people see their ADHD as a superpower; fueling their passions and helping them to pivot between priorities.
Some see ADHD as a roadblock to career success; distracting them from building business acumen or making them show up as disorganized.
This either/or thinking can show up in neurotypical colleagues as well, and comes up in coaching sessions frequently. Noticing both extremes can be helpful, as it provides greater perspective and helps to frame situations as they appear at the moment. But what could still be missing from this approach?
Focusing on Embracing “Both”
All perceptions are VALID. Noticing the extreme perspectives and acknowledging the pros and cons in a situation is always important. In coaching sessions with clients, we acknowledge the roadblocks, and learn to navigate them with the clients’ strengths. By embracing all of the possibilities and outcomes, we can anticipate and plan differently. Are you embracing the both/and?!
