Let’s talk about getting in the habit of building good habits. Who is consistent? Chances are you find your groove and stick to some habits for a length of time, and then need to reset. You are not alone. There are some great books that help build better habits.

Atomic Habits

Atomic Habits by James Clear has some lightbulb moments! A favorite takeaway was the concept of “habit stacking.” There are certain habits we are going to do quite regularly without reminders. If there are habits you are trying to build, habit stacking is all about pairing something you aren’t remembering or don’t enjoy with something you already have on auto pilot. Can’t start your day without coffee, but can’t remember to take your vitamins? Put the vitamins next to the coffee maker. This is just a simple example, but imagine the possibilities! The Power of Habit

Another book, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg has more great insights into habit building. This book refers to “the golden rule of habit change.” Every habit – big and small – follows a similar pattern. We get a cue, and we respond with a routine/activity, and get a reward. The power lies in maintaining the cue and reward, but changing the routine/activity.

ADHD and Habits

The neurodivergent perspective on habits varies by diagnosis. Autistic folks may rely on habits more than ADHD folks. The key for building successful habits with ADHD is to find interest, joy, and excitement. Doing tasks “just because” will feel like nails on a chalkboard to many ADHDers, but the gamification of chores, or finding fun ways to complete tasks provide some dopamine to the those seeking it. Follow your curiosity to find out what makes habits stick for you.
