Strengths-based leadership in action
When a community member was asked how current events in the US were impacting her approach to business, her response was, “I need to keep doing what I know. I know about creating community, I know how to turn strangers into neighbors, and I know how to be a friend.”
This was such a beautiful example of strengths-based leadership, and an inspiration for everyone to tap into their skill sets. Consider this an invitation to…
Lead with authenticity
Your role as a leader is complex. You are responsible for communicating organizational messaging down through your team, but if you aren’t careful, this could come across as inauthentic. Acknowledging how organizational decisions impact individuals reminds your direct reports that you’re more than a corporate robot.
Lead with humanity
Even if your organization is not facing reductions in force, your employees and team members may be navigating uncertainty in their communities. Their spouse may be impacted with job cuts, or their children may not be getting much needed school services.
Lead with creativity
As some organizations are ‘tightening their belts’ this can be an opportunity to get creative. Sometimes a new location for brainstorming and strategic planning does wonders, so take the team offsite when possible!
Lead with curiosity
This can be a double-edged sword. When wielded the wrong way, curiosity can feel invasive or inappropriate. If you approach situations with a genuine goal of learning how to better support people, and understand their POV, curiosity is usually welcomed.
Lead with empathy
Holding space for employees or team members to share what’s going on in their world can really build connection. The compassion exhibited with empathy (much different than sympathy) will be remembered by the recipient.
How does your leadership style create connection? Which of your strengths builds trust and encourages participation?
